The same day the Chinese government announced a web site dedicated to
human rights, hackers from the United States defeated its security and
replaced its message with one of criticism of China's human rights record,
to put it lightly.
A passing reference was also made to the Kevin Mitnick case and links to
Amnesty International and real Chinese human rights organizations were put
on the site.
Oddly enough, the hacked site remained up throughout the entire day of
October 27, 1998.
